In December 2017, a relative generously gave us complimentary flight tickets to visit the U.A.E. Here's my account of my stay in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Climate
Pros: Temperatures average 25°C in December/January, which is perfect for anyone wanting to escape the harsh European winter and trade it with sunny days and warm weather.
Cons: The summer months can be quite challenging, with temperatures soaring to an unbearable average of 45°C and daily peaks hitting 50°C. If you're planning a holiday, it's advisable to schedule your trip towards the end of the year to make the most of pleasant weather.
Cost of living
Pros:
Gas is cheaper than water: 1 liter of gasoline costs an average of €0,50! I remember we paid around €4 to fill up rental car tank, providing enough gas for the journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.
You enjoy a tax-free environment in Dubai, resulting in significantly higher purchasing power compared to many European cities. For instance, the local purchasing power in Dubai exceeds that of Paris by more than 20%.

Cons:
Rent comes at a hefty price tag. While we were fortunate to have free accommodation during our UAE stay, it's worth noting that the average rental for a one-bedroom apartment in Dubai hovers around €1,600 per month (presumably similar in Abu Dhabi).
Dubai is the temple of bling-bling and is full of show-offs. Watch out because you can easily end up splurging your salary on luxurious goods just to look as well-off as your peers.

Transportation
Pros:
Most highways boast 6 lanes!
Taxis are very cheap.
Cons:
Sandstorms are a frequent occurrence. We experienced one on our journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, extending our travel time from 2 hours to 4 due to reduced visibility to below 1000 meters caused by dust.
Traffic jams can be dreadful, especially during rush hours. Opting for public transport is advisable to avoid unnecessary stress.
Everyday life
Pros:
The UAE ranks among the safest countries globally.
Abundance of outdoor activities, from beaches and deserts to skydiving, skiing, and unique dining experiences.
English is widely spoken.
A cultural melting pot, providing opportunities to meet people from diverse backgrounds.
Cons:
Public Displays of Affection (PDAs) are not allowed; it's essential to be mindful of local cultural norms when traveling with a partner.
The absence of postal codes in the UAE may lead to navigation challenges, so prepare to adapt to navigating without this conventional system.
“Everybody speaks English in the UAE”
So is it worth visiting ?
Absolutely ! While I might not personally choose to reside there (never say never, though), witnessing the transformation of a vast desert into the thriving international hub of Dubai is undeniably impressive. The country is a unique bridge between the East and West, making it a fascinating destination to explore.
